Jeannine Wise is with us today on The SHAIR Podcast. SHAIR was one of the first resources Jeannine found when she was trying to get traction in early  sobriety. She is our first guest from Refuge Recovery, a Buddhist-inspired recovery pathway. For those having problems connecting with traditional rehab or twelve step programs, the Refuge Recovery is an option that may resonate with you.

Jeannine shares the incredible insights she's learned during her two years of sobriety. She reveals how her addiction was like being purified by fire, and how she transcended her pain to grow into the person she was meant to be.

OK folks today for our 200th episode we have Sara McGee joining us on The SHAIR Podcast! Sara is one of my dear friends.  She's an active member in the SRC and the SHAIR Sobriety Network. Sara is a born leader who has just celebrated 2 years of sobriety and has an incredibly strong foundation of recovery that touches every aspect of her life.  I’m honored to have her on the show.

Sara was a hardcore blackout drinker from the beginning. She felt everyone knew how life worked except her. Normal people seemed to have a sense of peace she couldn't find. So she pretended to have it together. She strived to be helpful and non-confrontational. She was a perfectionist and a high achiever who accomplished all her goals, but she was always afraid of being found out and she drank to cope with the anxiety.

From college, to career, to motherhood—drinking ruled her life. Until one day when she heard a voice say, "You don't have to..."

Jeanne Foot is a mental health advocate and certified addiction counsellor and recovery specialist, with over a decade serving individuals and families in the Toronto area, across the globe, and online.

Her own struggles with the nature of addiction and years spent navigating the mental health care system as an advocate for her child has enabled her to become a change agent and a mentor in transformation for others.

Jeanne is the product of three generations of trauma in her middle-class family. Her life was chaotic out of the gate. When she became a mother, the same thing happened with her children. Jeanne had to innovate to help herself and her family.

Jeanne believes that willpower can only take you so far when it comes to recovery. The brain can’t take care of everything. The issues are in the tissues, and she has found healing by integrating movement and breath to release the trauma from her body.

At the same time, she notices it helps others too, which makes her experience perfect for The SHAIR Podcast—Sharing Helps Addicts in Recovery!

Okay, folks. Today we have Ian Romans on the show. Ian is an avid listener of the SHAIR podcast and good friends with one of our previous guests, Daniel Herron, who's episode is SHAIR 154 entitled Addiction to the Underworld.

Ian has a harrowing and powerful story of recovery from heroin addiction. He is 2 years clean and wanted to share his experience. Ian was raised by an addict mother and an abusive stepfather. He was in and out of foster care and jail.

Ian dismissed NA from and early age because his parents would stop by their dealer's house on the way home from meetings. But once he decided to turn his life around, NA became the recovery pathway that lead to an inner transformation and a life in sobriety.

OK folks today we have Paul Fuhr joining us on The SHAIR Podcast.

Paul was referred to me by our good friend Anna David and she writes this email to me…

Paul is one of the best writers I know. He wrote for me at AfterParty and he has a book coming out in May called Bottle Neck, that may be the best book about recovery I’ve ever read.

Paul Fuhr is an addiction recovery writer whose work has appeared in The Fix, AfterParty Magazine, The Literary Review and The Live Oak Review, among others.

Paul was an alcoholic who didn't realize how ridiculous his life was until he got sober. Cracking open a beer while he watched morning cartoons with his son, forgetting to pick up his kids, or showing up at daycare with alcohol on his breath were all normal for him. Now he is rebuilding relationships and is a voice in recovery with his articles and addiction memoir Bottleneck.

Growing up in the woods of Wisconsin in a counterculture lifestyle, Suzula struggled with isolation and depression all through her childhood. Today, Suzula is a practicing attorney, recovery advocate, and a Minnesota Certified Peer Recovery Specialist (CPRS). She is the creator of the Recovery Yoga Meetings® and has been teaching it since 2012. Recovery yoga meetings help people live and breathe recovery on the mat and in their lives.

Our guest today is Arlina Allen. She's the host of the ODAAT Chat Podcast and has been clean and sober since 1994. Arlina always thought her life would straighten out if she found the right man, but Prince Charming never came to save her. Nothing changed until she removed alcohol from her life.

Listen to how she replaced alcohol with connection and is now starting the Sober Life School.

Cyndy L says her story in recovery involves being a slow learner. She went to her first meeting at twenty-one years old, but she didn’t pick up her one-year chip till she was forty. She fell in love with alcohol at a young age, leading her to a lifestyle of bars, bedrooms, and bad decisions. It took her a long time to realize the role her childhood and genetics played in her alcoholism.

Some people are proud to say they are the first person in their family to go to college, get a degree, or open their own business. Cyndy jokes that she’s proud to be the first alcoholic in her family to get sober.

Denise and I met 5 years ago when she was a patient at Costa Rica Recovery. We saw each other in passing at the AA and NA meetings. And when she finished her treatment, she went back to the United States. She recently returned to Costa Rica to share her story on the anniversary of her 5th year in sobriety. It impacted me so much, I asked her if she would be willing to share her story on the podcast and here we are.

Denise has an intense past full of childhood trauma and abuse, self-loathing, and racism that developed into full-blown alcoholism and a long pattern of destructive relationships. She eventually found sobriety but relapsed when shoulder pain and a toxic husband lead her into painkillers and other sedatives. She tried to kill herself and overdosed frequently as her son was growing up.

By some miracle, she found her way to Costa Rica Recovery and is grateful to be alive to tell us how she broke free from her addiction and the victim mentality that kept her from getting clean.
