At 38, Amberly Lago was a personal trainer, avid runner, and sponsored by Nike.

However, she never expected her life to turn upside down. Hit by an SUV, she underwent 34 surgeries to save her leg from amputation. Diagnosed with an incurable disease dubbed the “suicide disease” she lost her business, self-confidence, and dealing with chronic-pain in her leg quickly spiraled her into addiction.

Too scared to live, too scared to die, and a flicker of determination left, Amberly asked herself if she was going to sit back and play the victim or choose to be resilient and face unresolved trauma, past sexual abuse, and push forward to heal from chronic pain.

Today, Amberly Lago is a health and wellness coach, TEDx speaker, and a leading expert in the field of resilience and transformation. She is the best-selling author of “True Grit and Grace” and empowers people around the world by sharing how she turned a tragedy into triumph.

Through her book, coaching methods, and workshops she has curated unique tools to teach others how to tap into their superpower of resilience and persevere through any of life’s challenges. She offers hope and solutions for anyone living in chronic pain to live life to the fullest. Amberly has most recently been featured on NBC’s The Today Show, The Doctors, Hallmark, and contributed to magazines such as Shape, Fit Pregnancy, Health, and Disability Magazine.

Even if circumstances have narrowed life possibilities, Amberly’s story shows you can get through with grit and grace.

On this week’s Recovery Coaching call we helped Barbara, Jill, and Frank.

Barbara feels like she’s running on low-energy. Wanting to sleep a lot, she is having trouble finding motivation to participate in activities that are conducive to her recovery. However, when she partakes in her favorite craft, she feels more energized. The group helped Barbara come to the realization that our bodies communicate to us through emotions. If we’re frustrated in a situation, it’s our body's way of telling us the situation is no longer beneficial to our well-being and peace of mind. If we’re not energized, it is a good indicator that we need to focus our attention elsewhere. Bringing more self-awareness to our bodies, the group helped Barbara employ practical ways to let go of negative self-talk and put tools into place to shift her energy.

The group also helped Jill. Newly sober, Jill feels like she can’t be herself in social situations. Going into something unknown can cause undue stress and anxiety, but there are a few ways we can prepare. By taking on a service opportunity in social situations, we can alleviate social anxiety, help us stay busy, put our guard down, and allow us to have a good time. The group walks Jill through a number of other ways to connect with others and ease social anxiety.

Lastly, the group helped Frank. As a writer, Frank has been having issues getting his creative juices flowing. By taking practical steps and going back to the basics, the group challenges his lack of creativity by giving Frank a simple prompt to begin writing about.

Tune in to this week’s Recovery Coaching to gain tools, skills, techniques and a better understanding of recovery to improve our lives.

This week on the SHAIR Podcast, we’re joined by author and advocate, Erica C. Barnett. Erica had tried everything to stop drinking. Detox after detox, and treatment center after treatment center, she continued to find herself in a state of relapse. Stating that rock bottom is a lie, Erica believes that it is always possible to go lower than your lowest point. Tumultuous relationships, and empty vodka bottles hid throughout her apartment defined her life, acting as both her tormentors and closest friends.

After waking up one day, Erica decided that she had enough. Reassessing her values and passions, she was able to transform her pain into purpose to help those in the same position she was once in and shares this inspiring and emotional story with us.

Today, Erica C. Barnett is a veteran Seattle-based reporter covering politics, housing, homelessness and addiction for a variety of local and national publications and her own website, The C Is for Crank. Her book, Quitter: A Memoir of Drinking, Relapse, and Recover, is available now.

There are multiple pathways to recovery, including recovery coaching. In our first Recovery Coaching call, Omar Pinto introduced us to his style of recovery coaching and the concepts behind it. By holding space for others, and using our intuition to guide us, we can help others address struggles, find accountability, and process uncomfortable feelings.

Today, we helped Tori begin to set effective boundaries with a friend. By taking part in self-care, setting effective boundaries can begin. The Recovery Coaching group held space for Tori by asking open-ended questions about her current situation and creating a sense of accountability and support by giving her self-care suggestions.

We also helped Valerie address accountability. Asking herself if she really wants to stay sober, her desire to drink has never been so strong, and she feels recovery is far out of reach. With limited meetings and accountability, Valerie is faced with the fearful decision to walk the unknown path of a sober life. However, with guidance, the group assured that Valerie is not alone. The group also gave her new tools to help her sustain accountability and begin to create a support group around her to kickstart recovery.

Lastly, the recovery coaching group helped Shannon navigate the uncomfortable world of anger. What resists, persists, and unfortunately releasing anger is something many of us were not taught as a child. Agitated, bitter and frustrated, Shannon is struggling to release anger from her past. Using techniques suggested by Omar Pinto, Shannon was guided and challenged with two different ways to release anger in a healthy way.

Tune in to this week’s SHAIR Recovery Coaching Call to gain tools, skills, techniques and a better understanding of recovery to improve our lives.

Is there a past hurt or toxic trauma that’s keeping you from being your best self?

Whether it be a person, ex, principle, or a belief system, many of us are used to sitting across from doctors, therapists, and psychiatrists only to hear them tell us that there’s something wrong with us or we have a chemical imbalance.

However, what if the only chemical imbalance we have, is one that we created ourselves?

This week on the SHAIR Podcast, we’re joined by Master Coach, Christine Hassler. Christine left her successful job as a Hollywood agent to pursue a life she could be passionate about. Christine believes once we get out of our own way, we can show up to make the meaningful impact we are here to make. Today, she teaches and inspires people around the world.

Based on the belief that any human being has the power to transform, Christine also gives us thought-provoking insight into her release-writing and tantrum exercises.

Where are you holding onto old resentments? How do you begin to heal past hurts? This inspiring conversation will help you answer those questions!

When we talk about addiction, we have to talk about overcoming odds. But the world is bigger than us and our addictions, and people have to overcome all sorts of odds.

He is now a TEDx speaker and the host of the Overcoming Odds Podcast and is here to tell us how he climbed his way out of a hopeless fate.

Oleg has rewritten his story from a Russian orphanage to a rich and fulfilling life in the United States. How will you overcome the odds and rewrite your own story in recovery?

What possibilities are out there for you that you don’t even see? How can you focus on what good can happen instead of worrying about everything that could go wrong? How can you identify your identity gaps to crush self-limiting beliefs and make success your second nature?

Our guest is Anthony Trucks. He is a former NFL football player, motivational speaker, and the creator of The Identity Shift process. Anthony overcame a traumatic childhood and used adversity to learn how to shift himself into better and better versions of himself.

Today, Anthony talks about the three phases of Identity Shift and how implement them into a continual process of growth that will take you to heights you never could have imagined!
