Rebecca Spuller joins us today on The SHAIR Podcast.

Today Rebecca walks us through her horrific battle with alcoholism, depression, suicide and death in the family.  It’s an incredible journey from recovery and how she transformed her life.

In the past 11 months, she’s gotten sober, left a 6-figure job to start my own consulting company and basically, just reinvented her life.  She created a blog called My 2.0 Project where Rebecca has chronicled everything she’s been doing since shortly after she got sober.

When she first started this blog, it was under the cover of anonymity due, in part, to her profession as a corporate HR manager, but also, because she was still harboring a lot of shame and embarrassment about her alcoholism. Well… forget that.  She works for herself, no longer embarrassed, and is not inclined to hide anymore.

Join us now as Rebecca shares her amazing journey with us.

Patty Powers joins us today on The SHAIR Podcast and shares her unbelievable battle with addiction and her amazing journey into recovery.

Patty began drinking and using drugs recreationally as an adolescent. At eighteen she moved to New York City where chance meetings with other addicts opened doors to careers, romantic relationships, the art world and the music scene. For years, whenever the negative consequences of addiction started taking their toll, survival instincts kicked in and she’d return to Toronto.

By 1987, she was living alone in an abandoned building in Los Angeles, having cut all ties to her former life. It was at this low point she was first introduced to recovery. On December 10th 1988, Patty was admitted into a treatment facility located outside of New Orleans for heroin addiction, cocaine, and methamphetamine use. She was discharged with 42 days clean on the first day of Mardi Gras and has remained drug and alcohol free.

Listen in as Patty shares her story now!

Lizzie Edwards joins us on The SHAIR Podcast.  Lizzie wants to know; what do you do when your partner is getting out of rehab, has multiple years battling addiction, is resisting the process of recovery and relapse is imminent?

You ask yourself the tough questions:

  1. Am I willing to put my life on hold while I stand by my partner during the process?
  2. Am I willing to do the work on myself and go to support groups like CODA and ALANON?
  3. Am I willing to set clear limits and boundaries moving forward with my partner?
  4. Am I willing to draw a line in the sand about relapse and create a no tolerance policy should a relapse occur?
  5. Am I will willing to cut off all people, places, and things that would trigger a relapse for my partner?

There are so many questions we have to ask ourselves during this process because a using drug addict will destroy everyone and everything in their path in order to use.  It’s not personal and in moments of clarity they will feel shameful and remorseful but unless they are actively seeking recovery they will eventually go back to using and wreaking havoc.

Listen to this Podcast Episode as Lizzie and I discuss living in a co-dependent relationship with an addict who is not entirely ready to surrender.

Amy B. joins us today on The SHAIR Podcast, and Amy got sober 10 years ago using 12-step recovery. Most recently she became a recovery coach and is participating in an internship with a long-term up to two years sober treatment living facility. She joins us today to share with us her unbelievable battle with alcohol and her inspirational journey into recovery.

Clean Date: August 4, 2006

Below are few questions Amy answered for us on the show.

Omar: What is the best suggestion you have ever received?

Amy B. : Don't give up until the miracle happens. A gentlemen on Friday nights who ... He called me Miracle Girl. Every Friday night I would go into the meeting and Jim, his name happens to be Jim like my husband. He'd be like, "Did it happen?" I'm like, "Not yet, Jim." When the miracle started happening, I'm like, "I got to start dressing better. I got to get a haircut. I'm like a walking miracle, you know." One of the things that people say to me, they call me their Miracle Girl or Funny Amy. You know how we all have handles. I'm like, "As long as I'm not Old Amy, I'm okay. You guys call me whatever you need to call me."

Once that miracle happened, the epiphany, the beer truck or leaving that booze in that house and that, just awed by gratitude of ... Gosh. That year I stopped drinking alone when my kids were little, the obsession never left. Never left, until I actually did the program and got free from the obsession, whether I was drinking or not, I was in the obsession. My husband's a normal drinker. When he's drinking, I don't wish I was. That's freedom. That's freedom.

Omar: If you could give a newcomer only one suggestion, what would that be?

Amy B. : Open your mind and try a real adventure. You can always go back to hell. Hell doesn't close the door. When I sobered up, I couldn't do one errand a day. I wasn't able to get dressed and I couldn't even take a shower most days. Now, there's not enough time in a day to get all the things done I want to do. Now, I'm truly free. I never felt like an adult before and that was one of the things that kept me drinking. Now, I'm a full-fledged adult with the same responsibilities, but also the same freedoms as an adult. That's my thing, just try it. Give it six months, give it a year. Give it whatever time limit, just try. I didn't know there was this much grace in the world. I did the same thing for 30 years, and I got the same results. I tried something different for 10, and I now I can't even imagine what's on the horizon for me.

Josh Horton joins us today on The SHAIR Podcast, and Josh's story was featured in the Oxford Eagle online newspaper titled, Meet Joshua Horton: Ole Miss Law student overcomes odds, fights to make difference. Josh is a second-year Old Miss law student who finished magna cum laude from the Ole Miss Honors College, but prior to his achievement Josh was a train wreck, wreaking havoc everywhere he went. That sound about right, Josh?

Josh Horton: Yeah, I don't know. It might be more of a plane crash than a train wreck but yeah, it was pretty bad. A little bit's happened since then. That was a few months ago. We've had a lot of progress since then. Matter of fact, I'm from Atlanta originally which I'll get into in my story. We had a large center feature on the front page of the Atlantic Journal Constitution talking about “No Matter What” and what that means in my recovery and the story of my journey that has brought me to law school.

Omar: Do you have a Favorite Quote?

Josh Horton: Why yes I do…

"The test of success is not what you do when you're on top. Success is how high you bounce when you hit the bottom" ~ George Patton

Omar: I hear you brother! So what is the best suggestion you have ever received?

Josh Horton: My sponsor made a comment to me once. I told you my father was killed when I was a young man or a baby actually. For a long time I was looking for a father figure and I was looking for somebody to show up and rescue me or take care of me. I was talking to Tim about this and I said, "I've always just wanted a guy to show up and be that father figure." He goes, "Josh, when you going to stop looking for that guy and start being that guy?" That really I think was a pivotal moment in not just my recovery but my entire life. He was right. When I started to do that, my life changed. My whole ... Everything started to kind of shift and I realized I don't have to wait on anybody else anymore. I can go do that now. I can go be what I've been looking for my entire life. I don't have to wait on somebody else to show up and do it for me.

Omar: That was another beautiful God shot right there, the miracle of sponsorship. So Josh if you could give a newcomer only one suggestion, what would that be?

Josh Horton: Surrender I think. That's the answer to most of my problems today is the ability to surrender in whatever I'm doing. It's kind of like that spiritual jujitsu. If I'm willing to surrender I can overcome just about anything. My pain usually comes from my resistance to the process and the more I try and resist the more pain and discomfort I have and the more mental anguish and turmoil as well. That's the biggest piece of mind I can get today. It's just this ability to surrender.

Brinn Black joins us today on The SHAIR Podcast.

Brinn’s new single “Daddy’s Medicine” is a powerful ballad that tells the all-too-real tale of living with a father who struggles with alcoholism.

Since she was a child, her dad has really struggled with alcohol addiction and it’s torn the family apart.  A few years ago, he decided he was going to go to a rehab facility in Nashville, which ended up bringing them a lot closer together.

On today’s show Brinn talks about the steps she took in her own recovery to develop the coping skills she needed to deal with her Father’s Alcoholism, here are few highlights from our interview.

Omar:  What is the best suggestion you have ever received?

Brinn:   To let myself be loved. I needed that, to hear that permission. A friend of mine just kind of shook one time and was like, "Just let yourself be loved. Why are you fighting it from everybody?" That same friend, we always joke, we're like, "Sometimes you just have to make life work for you."

Omar:  That is awesome. I love it. "Just let yourself be loved."

Brinn:   "Just let yourself be loved." She just looked right into my soul and was, like, "I don't understand you, why you love so hard, you love big, but you fight this from everybody around you. Like, wake up," you know?

Omar:  Finally, if you could give our listeners only one suggestion, what would it be?

Brinn:   Just to give themselves some grace, because I think if we give ourselves grace then we can extend it to others more. But it's hard to give to yourself.

In my search to find myself; how &/or why my brain acts the way it does &/or does the things it does, I was given a gift from God himself. “Constant Conscious Contact” and Realization with God has Helped me to find the most Virtuous of Values to Help Others in Gods Ways, Not mine. Only by giving my willingness to God was any of this possible. In return God took my Cravings Away so I can have a Sound Mind, Body, &/or Soul.

So here I am & I don't want to be Anonymous! I want to Show You My Face and for You to Hear My Voice! I am One of 24 Million Fellows in Recovery and Now that We have been able to Start to Raise Awareness and reduce some STIGMA... Well now there is God’s Work to do! Help prevent this deadly disease of addiction. Speak Up! Recovery Works!
